The event will be at the posted coordinates at Tri-Corner Knob Shelter from the posted time, 1830-1900. You do not need to hike with me, or with anybody else. You can hike on your own to get there. You will likely want to camp, because the alternative option will be 15 miles of night hiking to get back to your car, but the choice is yours.

I’m starting a section hike on the Appalachian Trail at Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Tuesday, March 28th. I plan to spend my first night camping at the Tri-Corner Knob Shelter.

This event will be nothing fancy, just some conversation about caching, hiking and enjoying the surrounding beauty of the mountains. No food provided. There is a spring nearby for water, filter recommended. Plan for a lengthy hike, if you plan to meet me there. Plan on approximately 15 miles from either Newfound Gap to the south, or Davenport Gap to the north. You will need to reserve a permit for camping at the shelter, if you plan on spending the night. This can be done at Smokies Permits. Choose the Backcountry permit option. I believe it is $8.00/night for a permit. Cell service will be spotty at best and likely unavailable. The shelter sits at an elevation of 5,920 feet and has room for 12 campers. There is some overflow tent camping, but this will be near the peak of thru hiker season. Plan for appropriate weather conditions. There is a privy available at this shelter.

I will be leaving from the shelter location the next morning, hopefully by 7am, and continuing my hike north.
